When people find out that I have a radio show, the first thing most of
them ask is "What kind of music do you play?" It's not as easy a
question to answer as you might think.
I could tell them I play folk,
because I do. But when some people think of folk music, they think
it's all political, or pouty, or (worst of all) plodding.
That's just not the way it is.
I could tell them I play
country, because I do. But when some people think of country, they
think it's all horses, or hayseeds, or (worst of all) "Hot". That's
certainly not the case on the Carnival of Song.
I could tell them I play alternative, because I do that
too. But when some people think of alternative, they think it's all
dreary, or dark, or (worst of all) dismal. That doesn't quite describe it
either.
So, I guess my answer is this: I play music from
artists who deserve to be heard because of the emotional honesty of their
work. Whether it's disturbing or amusing, happy or sad, these artists'
songs are still, in some fashion, beautiful.
You may have heard of some of the artists I play; some
of them may be new to you. Either way, I hope that you'll find
something in their songs and in the show to make a part of your heart, as
I've found in music time and time again.
Enjoy the ride...
