Here's a look back at some of my
favorites releases from 2003... (To return

Cory Branan The Hell You Say (Madjack
Records)
The very first time I heard this record, back around January of 2003, I
thought to myself, "This is going to be my favorite record of the year, and one
of my favorites ever, period." It was love at first listen, and it was
true. A stunning CD.

Jesse Malin The Fine Art of Self
Destruction (Artemis Records)
If the devil is in
the details, then Jesse's possessed by smoky bars, crowded subway cars and
abandoned dreams. Filled with great true stories, this album's grasp of
what it means to grow up is moving whether you're a New York City punk, a bus
and tunnel kid, or anyone with a vivid and compassionate memory.

Minibar Fly Below The Radar (Foodchain
Records)
Their long awaited
follow up to Road Movies is a lush journey across America and across the
ocean in search of the illusive feeling of home.

Thea Gilmore Avalanche (Compass
Records)
Decadent and
different...a stand out CD.
| |
An American Starlet The Duchess of
Hazard (Independent)
I shudder to use
the term, but this is a great "alt-country" record, plain and simple.
| |
Tara Angell Come Down
(Independent)
A deep, dark,
lovely record best listened to around 3 AM but perfect anytime you want to poke
around the shadows of your heart to see what lurks there.
| |
Deanna Varagona The
Goodbyes Have All Been Taken (Gadfly)
A bunch of
great country blues tunes sung by one of the most powerful and expressive
singers there is. |
| |
Damien Rice O (Vector Recordings)
This record made
pretty much everyone's best of list, and deservedly so. It's heartening
when something this original gets so much attention.
